Hand Therapists

Alison Derbyshire

Hi. I'm Alison Derbyshire, I'm a Registered Hand Therapist and the Practice Manager at Otago Hand Therapy.

I was born in Canada and grew up near Toronto, not far from Lake Ontario. I left my Mum and Dad and Sister in Canada to travel to New Zealand on an 'OE experience' when I finished University - but I love New Zealand and have decided to make this my home. I initially settled in Rotorua, where I met my husband. We lived in Rotorua for 9 years and had a daughter, Sophie. We moved to Dunedin in 2009 and our son, Max was born here in Dunedin.

I've been working in Hand Therapy since I arrived in New Zealand in 2000, gaining my hand therapy training through the New Zealand Association of Hand Therapists at Waikato Hospital. In Rotorua, I worked at QE Health hospital, starting up the Hand Therapy programme while also working in Vocational Rehabilitation, Rheumatology and Pain Management programmes. After Sophie was born I started my own practice, Rotorua Hand Rehab and changed the name to Otago Hand Therapy when we moved to Dunedin in 2009.

I have two very sporty kids - Sophie is a Springboard platform Diver for New Zealand and Max wants to be the next Christiano Ronaldo - he's obsessed with football. I work full time but my hours revolve around these kids, so I offer late night and Saturday morning appointments to make up for time lost to the 'after school run'. You might see one or both kids here after school, or my husband Neil, who often picks up the kids on his way home.

I look forward to meeting you and your family (you can bring them along if you like) and helping you get your hand, wrist or elbow back to a level where you can get on and do the things you want to do.

Reception & Administration

Wendy

Hello. I’m Wendy Roberts and my position here at Otago Hand Therapy is Receptionist / Administrator.

Born and bred in Dunedin, I left for the ‘bright lights’ of Auckland at the age of 19 years. After 18 years in the north my husband and I decided to return to Dunedin with our son in December 1999. A move well worth making.

Apart from working at Otago Hand Therapy, which I really enjoy, I have a variety of activities that keep me busy. I have spent the past few years renovating / redecorating our home, gardening, enjoying time baking and cooking and in particular love spending time with my dog Arlo – he is such a delight. See the photo below. This is his first experience of snow in Dunedin.

My hours at Otago Hand Therapy are 8.15am to 12.15 pm Monday to Friday and I look forward to talking to you whether it be for a new booking, a follow up appointment or a general enquiry.
